Rodeo Personnel

Barnes PRCA Rodeo

At the helm of the Rafter B Bar Ranch, the second and third generations of the Barnes family orchestrate the daily rhythms that sustain our legacy. Ensuring the well-being of 165 bucking horses and 70 bulls, our ranch, nestled in the picturesque valley between Peterson and Cherokee Iowa along the Little Sioux River, serves as the nurturing ground for the thriving spirit of Barnes PRCA Rodeo. It’s a testament to our enduring commitment to the welfare of our exceptional livestock and the perpetuation of rodeo excellence.

In 1950, Barnes PRCA Rodeo was founded with the guiding principles of integrity and hard work by Bob and Donita Barnes.  The late Bob Barnes, known as “the Colonel”,  is still one of the most respected stockmen in professional rodeo.  He was selected as the 1984 PRCA Stock Contractor of the Year and inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame ten years later in 1994.  Donita Barnes was posthumously awarded the inaugural PRCA Lifetime Achievement Award for contract personnel at the PRCA award banquet in 2011.  The PRCA Lifetime Achievement Award was renamed in her honor in 2012.

Today the second and third generations of the Barnes family handle the day-to-day operations of the Rafter B Bar Ranch and provide for the health and welfare of their highly prized animals.

Pro Rodeo Announcer Kelly Kenney

Kenney was born and raised in small town America where his family has resided for many generations, in Southwest Missouri. Where the priorities were, family, church, hunting & fishing, sports, agriculture, horses, cattle, etc.

Kenney’s interest in rodeo came young & he started competing in high school, into college while simultaneously playing music in a country band. Ironically, at a local rodeo in ‘96, the announcer ‘no showed’ and Kenney reluctantly filled in to help & from there, his career began. Working many different rodeos over the next few years & becoming the rodeo coach at Missouri Valley College, Kenney received his PRCA Pro Rodeo Announcer card in 2000 (at 25 yrs old) and he’s worked btwn 75-100 performances annually since & currently.

With wife Amanda & 6 yr old son Kolter, they still reside in Southwest MO., in the Stockton Lake area on their working cattle ranch enjoying the ranch & rodeo life.

“I’m forever indebted to many folks. This wonderful life wouldn’t be possible without all those who’ve helped us, the stock contractors, committee’s, fellow announcers, specialty acts, clowns, bullfighters, sponsors, fans, friends, the list is long, and we’re beyond grateful & humbled by it all” Says Kenney.

Rodeo Clown Allan Dessel

Allan Dessel grew up in rural Cherokee County. He became a bull fighter at the young age of 15 after listening to stories and seeing photos of his father who fought bulls for 10 years before Allan was born. Already assisting the Barnes Family with their rough stock schools, he was hired by the Barnes family to fight his first high school rodeo in Estherville, Iowa. Accepted into the PRCA shortly after graduating from high school, he fought his first PRCA Rodeo in Cherokee, Iowa in 2003. Working more than 40 performances across 9 states with the Barnes PRCA Rodeo Family, he ended his rookie year in the PRCA working the Benny Binion Bucking Bull Sale at the NFR in Las Vegas, Nevada.

He was soon urged to become a clown/barrelman in addition to bull fighting and trained under nationally acclaimed PRCA barrelman and specialty act, John Harrison. Just one year later, in 2007, Allan worked his first rodeo as a barrelman. He was approved for his PRCA clown/barrelman and specialty act card in 2008. Since then he has worked many PRCA Rodeos including the Prairie Circuit Finals and the First Frontier Circuit Finals. 2024 will find Allan as barrelman for the National Western Stock Show Rodeo in Denver, Colorado.
